With the abundance of electronics and toys this holiday season, this seems like a good time to share some ideas on how to recycle your batteries. There are lots of reasons you should avoid throwing batteries in the trash: they contain toxic chemicals; many states forbid disposing of some batteries in the trash because they are a potentially hazardous material; and recycling batteries can help to protect natural resources.
Here are some helpful tips on how you can safely and easily recycle your batteries.
- Bag or tape the batteries together and store the batteries in a cool, dry place.
- If you see a swollen or bulging battery place it in non-flammable material (like sand or kitty litter) and call Call2Recycle at 877-723-1297 for instructions on how to properly dispose of it.
- Collect your batteries and drop them at a Call2Recycle site, you can locate the location nearest to you here. To ensure maximum recyclability, aim to drop them off within 6 months of collection.
